This story begins in 2022, when we started a second phase of material research with the studio. Our goal was to find a material for a vest that was natural, biodegradable and with a low environmental impact but at the same time comfortable and performing.
After months of research and attempts, we arrived at Tencel Lyocell, which incredibly responded to all our needs.
TENCELâ„¢ Lyocell is a man-made cellulosic fibre found in nature, similar to viscose and modal, which brand name is owned by the Austrian company Lenzing AG. The company provides two types of fibres under the Tencel brand: Lyocell (the one we usually use) and Modal.
To make Tencel Lyocell, wood pulp is dissolved in a solvent, and this mixture is pushed through a spinneret (a device which looks similar to a shower head) to form fibre strands in a solvent spinning process. The resulting fibres can then be spun into yarns, and later woven or knitted to make cloth.Â
Harvested from Eucalyptus trees and produced through a closed loop manufacturing process, Tencel Lenzing is sourced from forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and PEFC. Eucalyptus trees are sustainable, regenerate quickly, and grown free of herbicides and pesticides. For all these reasons, Tencel is eco-friendly and safe for the environment.
Established this, we only had to carry out research confirming its amazing performative and sustainable qualities compared to its biggest competitor: organic cotton.
Conventional cotton production can use up to 2000 chemicals during the entire manufacturing lifecycle. If a fabric is organic, but not GOTS certified, harmful chemicals are still present in production. Tencel by Lenzing is manufactured with one non-toxic organic chemical compound and is tested and proved to not be in the fiber after production. Many organic cotton products start from an organic cotton field, but during production many chemicals are used which no longer makes the fiber organic.

In addition to this, Tencel is softer than silk and cooler than linen. It possesses perfect moisture management. The higher the moisture absorption the drier the sleeping environment. Tencel absorbs 70% more moisture than cotton in a controlled manner and then quickly releases it to provide the perfect dry sleeping environment. This property of the fiber reduces bacterial growth without the addition of chemicals (it is nearly impossible for bacteria to grow on the fiber).
The fiber yield of Tencel is 10 times higher than conventional cotton, which means for every 1 cotton shirt, 10 Tencel shirts can be made.Â
Now that you know what Tencel is and why we try to prefer it to any other material for our garments, all you have to do is choose the product you prefer in our shop.🤗
